GoDaddy: WordPress Incompatibility with Windows Platform
Posted on 25. Apr, 2010 by Krista Abbott in Blogging, Social Media, Techie Stuff
Welcome Back! If you haven't already signed up for my FREE 7 Day video series on "Secrets to Unleashing Success", do it now!!! You won't regret it. :)
How to Make Sure the Foundation Your Blog is Built On Is Not Shaky Ground.
Last year, when I first started exploring the wonderful world of self-hosted WordPress blogging, I contacted my host Go-Daddy to ask some questions and get started. Their wonderful technical support agents directed me on how to install the WordPress application in my GoDaddy back office, set up my database and all of the other “behind the scenes” technical mumbo jumbo that goes along with blogging.
There was, however, ONE VERY CRITICAL piece of information, GoDaddy failed to point out to me and that is WordPress is incompatible with a Windows Platform. So, for the past 6 months (2 months of pre-launch development, and then subsequent launch and maintenance) I have earned a “frequent flyer” designation with GoDaddy technical support.
Still with multiple calls and several hours of going back and forth with technical reps and administrator support (that’s who you get to talk to when the technical reps can’t figure out what’s going on) I was experiencing problems that my other blogging friends never had to deal with.
What?!!??
Seriously, I was starting to think GoDaddy was messing with me. Even my friends were starting to make comments – like “Why does GoDaddy hate you so much?” or “What is the deal with you and GoDaddy?” Realizing of course, GoDaddy couldn’t possibly “hate” me, because well….I’m so darned adorable, that just couldn’t be it.
It wasn’t until recently when I was in the process of transitioning my radio show website to a self-hosted WordPress format and these same problems started to surface again that my blog designer convinced me that I needed to figure out what was causing all the blog drama. So, I decided to Just Ask Kim, my techie guru friend and blog syndication partner. After a short conversation Kim revealed the nasty little secret GoDaddy kept from me – WordPress runs much better on a Linux platform!!!
Ahhh!!!! Are you kidding me Kim? Nope!!! She was right on spot. So last week, Kim Castleberry and I spent some “quality time together” working on getting all this straightened out. We backed up my blog and database (everyone should do this on a regular basis by the way….learn how HERE) and we deleted everything, changed platforms and reloaded it all again….working into the weeeee-hours of the morning!
I am extremely happy to report, that I am writing this post from my newly transferred blog, on my new Linux platform.
I’m all smiles. Many of the headaches I have experienced in my blog lifetime are no longer a problem. Now, I admit initially I was mad with GoDaddy, but after I calmed down, and forced my mind to embrace the proper perspective I was able to let all that go.
See, I learned many valuable lessons from all this blog drama. I gained a lot of technical and troubleshooting expertise from my many conversations with GoDaddy’s technical and administrator support as well as from the conversations this week with my personal techie, at Just Ask Kim. And now, I can pass that knowledge along to you my friends and loyal readers, as well as my social media coaching clients.
I don’t think GoDaddy did this to me on purpose, I think it was a simple oversight with a lot of unintended consequences. GoDaddy does have great (and very patient) customer support. My only recommendation to them is to make sure all their technical staff know to tell WordPress application users that they need a Linux Platform rather than Windows if they want to use syndication friendly plug-ins, and avoid problems down the road.
While WordPress will still work on a Windows platform, there are a lot of issues with plugins that will require work-arounds, time, and research to resolve. And if you have any hair left after you’ve resolved them all, you will likely decide to do what I did…and take the plunge for the transition. My blog was down for a whole week to get this complete. But I am glad to say now that it is over, it is done and it’s time to move on.
Lesson learned and now maybe I can save someone else from making the same mistake and spare them the drama!!
WordPress + Linux = Peaceful Bliss
&
WordPress + Windows = Blog Drama!

Hi Krista
So glad to see your blog back on the web. This makes me wonder about my blog because Go-Daddy is my host as well. I know what it’s like to keep your wits about you when technology seems to fail it can be nerve racking!
Like you said, you learned a lot now can help others if they have the same problem! Well done Krista…well done! (-:

Hi Krista,
Thank you for the heads up on this issue. to date, I have not had any issues with my blog, BUT…this is not to say I won’t encounter technical difficulties down the road. I remember back in the early 00’s when I was teaching at a technical college, all my geekster colleagues (who were wonderful, by the way) could not say enough good stuff about Linux. Many of them had the red hat bumper sticker that was popular (maybe it still is?). Anyway, from what I could decipher from their highly coded conversations, Linux is definitely the platform on which to run anything. Windows has never been in favor with the Geek crowd, from what I could gather from my tech students’ constant bashing of Windows to what my colleagues talked about…or should I say, what I could understand!

I am so happy to hear that the blog drama is now over and done with and you have moved into the land of peaceful bliss!
I have to admit, however, that this is a bit over my head. I use Windows and (knock on wood) have not experienced problems with my plugins and such. What type of problems where they? I also have never heard of Linux, but hey, now I have! So I’m thinking since I don’t have the problems I don’t need to switch….or am I wrong in thinking that?
Thanks Krista, and again, congrats on handling an issues that I’m sure brought much frustration! That always feels amazing!

Huh! I won’t say I’m getting too old for this, but the techie stuff is interfering with my “Mad Cow Disease”. My question now is if you are using a Mac does the same problems exist? @Nelson Schroeder, LOL, you are so funny Nelson. To answer your question, it shouldn’t matter if you are on Mac or PC. The hosting platform is separate from your Operating System. I will say Linux is the platform of choice for most Mac users I know…hope that helps clear the air for ya!

I have a question for you Krista. Does GoDaddy support both platforms or just the Windows one, and if both why would they let you install it on Windows knowing there would be a problem with it?
I have blogs with several hosts and have migrated blogs from one host to another and I’ve never come across the situation where I could select platforms.
I’m going to tweet this because I think it’s something people should know.
You have a lovely blog, but if I could make a small suggestion, that being that you install a ‘reply to comment’ plugin so that people know when someones replied to a comment. This simple plugin should help increase your return traffic.

@Sire, Ah..good questions Sire. Go Daddy does offer both Linux and Windows platforms. Usually when setting up the hosting account the host provider gives the option of “Linux” or “Windows”. Those who are savvy would know to choose Linux for Wordpress, but newbies (which I was back when I first set mine up) may not be so savvy and have to learn the hard way. Unfortunately, a lot of GoDaddy tech support have no knowledge of the WordPress application (because they claim not to “support third party applications”…even though they offer an install directly from the hosting control panel). Some of the tech support guys, don’t know how to help or what to recommend because they are not familiar with the applications they are supporting.

I hate to say this, but I knew about this issue, and I wish I had known you before seeing it tweeted because I’d have mentioned it. There’s some screwy thing about loading both blogs and websites on the Microsoft platform, and it’s always been recommended to pay for the Linux hosting rather than the Microsoft hosting unless you have specific technical needs.

Krista, I was glad we were able to get everything straightened out for you!
This is a very confusing topic for a new blog owner – because we tend to assume (as Beth has) that if our PC is windows – we need windows!
This refers to the operation of the server our blog lives on, not our personal PC. Our hosts MUST be running Linux for our wordpress install to function correctly. (PS: Beth, you’re on Linux Hosting hun)
Fortunately for those that like Windows for their desktop PCs/laptops, we don’t have to change anything there for our hosting server to use Linux. It DOES however require a host that is SMART about what they sell. Many hosts, do not even offer a Windows hosting option to remove this confusion. The things that play nicely on windows hosting that the average user will run is so limited that many do not bother with the headache.
It was great to get to catch up with you Krista!

In regards to your question – I don’t think the hosting platform will affect those visiting the blog…only the owner and the things he/she wants to do with the blog. If there are plug ins that are interactive for the visitor, then it may impact the ability of those particular plug ins, but no the general experience for the visitor.

Is the problem mainly with GoDaddy as a host on Windows or is the problem with Windows? I believe that my hosting service uses Linux.
Krista Abbott Reply:
May 10th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
@Dr. Erica Goodstone, Hey Dr. Erica. Well…that depends on who you ask. LOL GoDaddy offers a choice of platforms (either Windows or Linux) and most people may not understand the differences between those options and what impact it can have on their overall blogging experience. Many other host providers automatically offer Linux, just because it works so much easier with so many different applications. GoDaddy doesn’t seem to have caught on to this yet. Not sure why…but their tech support (for the most part) can’t explain the difference either, and (in at least my case) didn’t inform about the WordPress preferences to Linux.

Hi Krista,
Okay, so, don’t tell me. . .your next business venture is going to be a LEMONADE stand!
Great story and warning for the rest of us. This definitely deserves to be re-tweeted and on my Facebook wall.
Dealing with “new” (to the user) technology can be so daunting, time consuming and costly. Unfortunately, what we don’t know that we don’t know, we don’t know!
Perhaps another lesson, for me and your readers, to take from this is — ask the question(s) that seem so impossible as to be, well IMPOSSIBLE (how could it be a hosting problem?; this can’t be an issue with GoDaddy, they’re so BIG, they must be able to host any blog without a problem?)!
After asking those “IMPOSSIBLE” questions spend a few minutes Googling them to see if you get any hits. Who knows, might save a lot of heartache.
BTW, you’ve got the right attitude about dealing with tech problems — and a great “SUPER TECH” in Kim.
Thanks for the heads up and potential time and hair saving advice.

@Robin Lynn Brooks, Hey Robin,
Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your suggestions and am checking into the comment thread features. Any specific plug in recommendations?

Thanks for clearing that up. Seems to me though that if you’re going to have tech support then the tech guys should know what they’re talking about otherwise the support is next to useless.
