Motorola Droid: Why I Like It Better Than The iPhone and BlackBerry

I Love My Droid
I have had about seven people ask me, just this week, how I like my Droid. So with all the questions, and many cell phone users ready to upgrade, I thought I would share my thoughts on the Droid here.
I have the Motorola Droid. Now this is, obviously, not the only Android smart phone on the market today. There were a few before the Motorola and there have been a few since. I can’t really speak to the value behind those phones, but I can speak to the awesomeness of this one.
I do have a couple of friends who have taken the HTC Incredible for a spin and they are more than happy with their phones. One of those friends even traded in his iPhone for the Incredible and another ditched his BlackBerry Storm 2 for it.
While iPhones have the appeal of pop culture and what I like to call “the Mac Cult”
I actually enjoy my Droid very much and like it better than the iPhone. Initially I thought about getting an iPhone, and almost did, but I am pleased with the Verizon network and didn’t want to change carriers just so I could be a kool-aid drinking iphone user. So, I waited it out hoping Verizon would get that iPhone contract they were rumored to be in negotiations for.
In the meantime, the Android phones hit the market. Skeptical at first, I watched – and waited. After hearing nothing but good reviews from the Motorola Droid I had to venture into the store and check it out. I was captivated by the sleek and sexy design and the high quality, sharp images from the screen, then there was the smooth glide of the touch screen – well let’s just say it had me at hello! (Obviously, I have a thing for gadgets…what can I say)
I like having options. So, being able to choose between a virtual QWERTY keyboard and the slide out QWERTY was very appealing to me. After a few attempts on the slide out board though, I found myself much more enthused by the virtual touch one. (and had less typos too).
As far as comparisons with the iphone, they really run neck and neck in my opinion with features and specks. You can see a full breakdown at Mashable by clicking here. In reviewing the Mashable comparison though, it is worth pointing out that this was created back in October when the Droid first came out. The Droid has picked up quite a few apps since then, and I have found more than I will ever use in the Droid Market, so I’m certainly not complaining about limited choices in the app department.
I’ve been very impressed with the quality of video that I’ve been able to capture with the video camera and enjoy the thrill of being able to capture a full recording and stream it live if I wanted to. Essentially, my Droid has replaced my video camera, my still camera, my ipod, my GPS system, and my cell phone, and if I really wanted to I could replace my laptop with it (but I don’t want to) ![]()
Of course there’s the cool features associated with smart phones of this caliber…like instant uploads to Facebook and You Tube and then there’s the Google features. Need I say more? Having full access to all of my Google applications has been an invaluable tool as an entrepreneur. I never feel like I am tied to the desk or the laptop to get some work done.
As far as why I picked the Droid over BlackBerry, well that’s simple. The BlackBerry is a great gadget if staying up on your email is the most important thing. Having used the BlackBerry previously, I can tell you the browser function on the is not the greatest. Personally, I need both a power browser and good reliable email access. I found both in the Droid.
All in all, I love the Droid and would recommend it to anyone interested in a smart phone that is as good as, if not better (in my opinion – better) than the iPhone and BlackBerry. If you are considering getting an Android phone then I say “Go for it!” I absolutely love mine and think you will be equally as pleased.
If you don’t want to take my word for it, then you can judge for yourself. I have included below some video demos and live comparisons for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Thanks for this Krista, I have only just really been introduced to the Iphone and love the idea of the applications. I have not heard of the Droid yet in Australia but now I may just wait and see if they come out here before i buy anything.
So thanks for this.

Krista,
I have not had the pleasure of using the Android and I may have to look into it. I did however drop my Blackberry against my better judgment because I truly love it. I purchased the Palm Pre Plus and I am still trying to figure it out. I keep hanging up on people the touch screen is kind of tricky.
All in all I guess these new phones are the wave of the future.
Thanks so much.

Mac Cult leader here. I fully understand your Droid fetish. I have the same for Apple and the iphone. The problem with iphone as you correctly pointed out is the carrier. That is changing in a year if we are to believe Apple. But the Droid is cool and I would get one if I hadn’t already drank my Kool-aid. Care for a sip…..

Krista,
Great info and review on the Droid phone. Not only your stellar recommendation, but also sites for people to make up their own minds. I still stick with a simple phone, I know, I’m a dinosaur.
Have an awesome day,
Val

Thank you Krista! Just about everyone I know has an iPhone, and its refreshing to know there’s something else out there to choose from that is just as good of a selection. The only thing that could make cell phones better is not having to be locked in to a particular carrier in order to have a phone (AT&T for the iPhone as an example). I’ve been shopping for a new phone, and your post is the first real review I’ve come across to really explain the new Droid phone is really like

Hey Krista, Thanks for sharing this. I was debating about the iphone, blackberry, etc. Now I find this! Hmmmm What to do?
I am going to be traveling a lot so I want to keep up to date without lugging my mac around.
This whole week I was planning the summer events and thought about the phone. I kept procrastinating now I know why. Thanks Krista
Miss you

Krista,
I bought the Android HTC Evo 4G last week. It’s not on the market until mid-June, but I got in on the pre-launch. BestBuy said it should be in today…I hope I get my call! (-:
I’m dumping my BlackBerry your right it’s OK for the e-mails, but not for the browser.

Hey Krista…I am one of those in “the mac cult.” You know there is a reason for this that non mac users will never understand. Anyhow…I am always up for learning about new technologies and you are not the first one I have heard about that loves their “droid.” Maybe you can start a new “droid cult.”
Thanks for sharing…

Hi Krista: Appreciate your review as I’ve been looking a getting with tech more. My daughter LOL when she sees me using the “old” tech. My cell phone works and does the job of what a phone does, eh? The Droid intrigues me and your post helps a lot, especially the comparison demo’s. Thanks Krista.
Your friend,
Arlan

Hey there Krista,
An interesting review you have of the droid here. I myself am a member of the Mac Cult and love my iPhone.
With iPhone 4 launching this summer (June or July) and it being unlocked on any network will that make make you rethink your decision or no?
Also, if you absolutely won’t get an iPhone then check out a phone called the Nexus One. Google makes it and it absolutely stomps the iPhone 3GS.
You can find it here http://google.com/phone or find the review I did of it on my blog that compares it to the iPhone.

I have to keep my phone simple.I didn’t like the Blackberry at all. Way to complicated. I will have to check the Droid out when I upgrade.
Thanks Krista.

I would have to agree with you that the iphone is sort of trash, in relation to the reliability factor.
The showcase of the product in san fran looked poor as well. The HTC looks pretty good to me as far as my next one.
